Oh wait, scratch that. It would take me forever to make new automails to a regular customer if they were even more complicated.
You only need to get new automails if you grow taller - or if something else changes in you, physically. So kids get their automails changed when they grow older. And that regular customer of mine actually had his automails changed only after I realized that they were too heavy for him... Or if you go into a really cold place, steel automails might cause your death in the snowstorms. You'd have to change them to carbon automails, they're great with cold.
But other than that, if you oil them every day, check that the screws are tight and wipe off the water after every bath and don't get into dangerous fights where you get them destroyed, they could last forever. Especially if a mechanic checks them up every now and then. Or regularly, if you happen to see him or her often.
