People come and go all the time around here. I think most if not all of us are more than used to that by now--it's just a fact of life as we know it here and there's nothing that can be done about it.
So what happens when someone comes back...different? They're the same individual, but their memories aren't entirely there--more than that, they're not really like they were the last time they were here. They might even be...kind of dangerous to be around.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is 'what do you do when someone you called a friend looks at you like you're almost a complete stranger?'

I need to talk to you. Preferably in person, if you can.

I honestly couldn't tell you. Could you give more details?

I had a friend here a while ago, but he left--when he came back, from his perspective it'd been somewhere around ten years or so.
It's probably a little generous to say he's not quite as friendly as he used to be. And he was never a very cheerful individual to start with.

Is he from your world or a different one?

[whew! he has nothing to worry about. ...okay that's a lie, but]
Well, I'm not quite sure what you can do in that situation, especially if he's dangerous.

I suppose the best way is to try and start over, if you really do want to be friends with them again-- it takes patience, I admit, but it's worked well so far for me. However, constantly referencing your previous time together might hurt your chances rather than help it.

...Would you try to start over even if they might end up being a threat?

Are they genuinely worth being friends with though?
text;
Even so, I...still want to believe he's worth it.

And, the only thing you can really do is get to know them again. If they're still the same person as before, or even close to that, then you should be fine. And even if they're completely different you might still get along.
Be careful though if you think they're dangerous.

Now that I've talked to him for a while, I really can't say he's the same at all. Or, uh...it's kind of complicated. I want to believe he can still be the person I knew back then, but if that's true he's hiding it well.
Really well.

Well, I've had a lot of "complicated" in my life. Do you want to talk about it? I was meaning to get some coffee soon anyway.

Pretty long story though, if you're up for it.

I can meet you at the nearby cafe.
